Finding an apartment

Finding accommodation in Reykjavík can be one of the most challenging parts of relocating as the housing market is tight, and long-term rentals are in high demand. Prices are high relative to average wages, with one-bedroom apartments in central Reykjavík costing between ISK 180,000–250,000 per month (roughly US$1,300–$1,800). Utilities are usually extra.

Most people find housing through Facebook groups such as “Leiga á Íslandi” or “Housing in Reykjavík.” Rental websites such as leiga.is and visir.is are also useful. It’s common to pay a deposit equal to one or two months’ rent, plus the first month upfront.
