Founded in 1934, the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) is maintained by the Federal Government of Brazil and offers free tuition to undergraduate and graduate students across five campuses: four in Porto Alegre and one in North Coast.

It was named the best federal university in Brazil by the Times Higher Education Ranking 2023. Its Pro-Rectory of Innovation and Institutional Affairs (PRIOR) promotes innovation, entrepreneurship and university collaboration with private and public institutions at both the national and international level. PRIOR comprises SEDETEC (Department of Technological Development); the Nucleus of Innovative Entrepreneurship; Zenit (UFRGS Scientific and Technological Park); and RELINTER (Secretariat for International Relations).

In addition, the Business Incubator of the Biotechnology Center of Rio Grande do Sul (IECBiot) has supported the establishment, development and consolidation of companies and technological projects in biotechnology and related sectors since 1992.
