It has a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in various fields such as agriculture, arts, engineering, health sciences, humanities, social sciences and technology. The university has over 20,000 students enrolled in undergraduate programs and over 2,000 enrolled in graduate programs. UFPel has been ranked among the top universities in Brazil and Latin America, according to the QS Latin America University Rankings. It has also been recognized for its research excellence, particularly in the areas of agriculture, health sciences and social sciences. The university also has a startup incubator called Co.nectar Hub, located at Pelotas Parque Tecnológico, which supports the development of innovative business ideas and entrepreneurship among students and faculty members.

UFPel is a tuition-free public university. 

Admission to undergraduate students is realized through a Brazilian government system called Sistema de Seleção Unificada (SISU),which is open to Brazilians who have finished high school. Each graduate course has a selection process, which is disclosed on their web pages.
