Language essentials
Malta has two official languages: Maltese and English. Maltese, a Semitic language with Italian and English influences, is the national language and widely spoken at home and in politics. English is used in education, business and government, making daily life accessible for international residents. Italian is also understood by many, reflecting decades of cultural exchange. For newcomers, knowing English is sufficient, but learning Maltese can enrich integration and deepen cultural understanding. Even a few basic phrases, such as bonġu (good morning) or grazzi (thank you), are highly appreciated and signal a willingness to engage with Maltese culture. The language is considered moderately difficult for English speakers due to its Semitic roots, though grammar and vocabulary often overlap with Italian. Popular schools for learning Maltese include the Institute of Maltese Language at the University of Malta (um. edu.mt/arts/malti/korsijiet/malteseforeign) and private providers like Education in Malta (educationmalta.com/learn-maltese). Free community courses are sometimes offered by local councils and by the Lifelong Learning program (lifelonglearning.gov.mt).
