Sector: Impact

We are an impact investment firm dedicated to ensuring private equity is directed towards filling funding gaps and backing companies that are doing good in Africa.

Founded by ‘Tokunboh Ishmael and Jumoke Akinwunmi in 2007, Alitheia Capital aims to close funding gaps and unlock socioeconomic prosperity in Africa. It has investment interests and partnerships across the continent and beyond, providing financial and nonfinancial support to African businesses that impact the lives of low-income households. Alitheia is an impact investor interested in businesses that deliver both financial and social returns. “We invest in enterprises that address business, social or environmental needs. That is basically to say that Alitheia Capital operates on the principle of doing well by doing good,” says ‘Tokunboh.

Targeting growth-stage businesses across western and southern Africa, Alitheia has invested in financial-services firms that drive financial inclusion, especially with technology. These have included fintech payment firms, digital lenders and cloud-infrastructure companies serving financial intermediaries. It also recently announced that a joint venture fund aimed at growing women-led businesses in Africa had reached its second close at $75 million. “Alitheia’s prime focus sectors are essential-services sectors, especially where certain products, services and populations have been overlooked or do not have access to traditional private equity funds. We prioritize agribusiness and essential consumer goods,” ‘Tokunboh says.

In addition to capital, Alitheia also provides strategic support to drive growth and achieve operational efficiencies. It connects entrepreneurs with a network of investors for follow-on capital and mentorship. ‘Tokunboh says that through strategic investments focused on segments of the economy that are traditionally underserved, Alitheia has achieved remarkable growth and delivered on its founding vision. It plans to continue to develop investments and strategies that will enable Africa to reach its full economic potential by driving gender parity and access to essential services. Like most investment firms, Alitheia is seeking growing companies with well-functioning teams, but these companies must also address social issues and aim to reduce gender disparity.
